The brackets are galvanized iron, the hangers are cast aluminum with a sealed bearing inside, and both arrive in the same carton with twenty-eight bolts and washers. You buy five pieces of timber locally and bring a drill. The frame takes about half an hour, the hangers another ten minutes.
Two different metals doing two different jobs. Iron carries the frame because mass is what keeps a corner rigid; aluminum hangs the swing because it does not rust into the bearing after a season of rain.
The top sleeve takes a 5.5 by 3.5 inch beam, the four leg pockets take 3.5 by 3.5 inch stock. Check what you are actually buying at the yard, since a board called a four by four is not four inches on either face.
Four hangers hang two swings. Each loop runs on a sealed bearing rather than a bolt through a hole, which is the difference between a quiet afternoon and the dry squeak everyone recognises.
Two brackets, four hangers, twenty-eight bolts and twenty-eight washers. Chain, seats and the lumber are not in it, because long timbers and a flat carton do not travel together.
Beam into the brackets first, while everything is still on the grass. Drill through the cast openings, bolt it, then fit the legs and lift. Hangers go on last, with the template stuck to the underside of the beam.
